Gary Hui is a natural born stockpicker with an instinct for winners. He just didn't always know it. Early in his professional career, the former Granville Boys High student figured out the accounting profession wasn't for him after stumbling upon the fee disclosures in the back of a prospectus. Seeing what the bankers were getting paid and what the accountants were earning was all he needed to know. Within two months he was a dealmaker, finding his way to JPMorgan. Except, he well and truly had the investing bug by then, and his constant compliance disclosures around what he was buying outside of work tested his boss' patience.   "I was investing a lot and my boss came to me and said, 'You're making my life a misery, what are you doing?' So I said 'Okay, I'm going to cross over'." These days, Hui is the San Francisco-based chief investment officer of the Arowana Australasian Value Opportunities Fund, an ASX-listed investment company. He cannot read enough, or talk enough, or think enough about stocks. He is "that guy" at the barbecue, bantering about investment ideas and getting kicked by his wife. [More]
